What Is Causing My Halitosis?
Halitosis is something that affects everybody at one point or another. The condition is caused by different factors. However, it is primarily caused by poor oral hygiene and leftover food that gets stuck between the teeth.
Common causes of halitosis
Knowing the common causes of halitosis will help patients to prevent it and enjoy a fresh breath again. Dentists can also provide tips on how to treat halitosis. Some of the most common causes of halitosis include:
The bacteria in the mouth feed off the sugars and starch in the food that one eats. It is important to brush the teeth at least twice a day and floss regularly to get rid of the food particles that get stuck between the teeth. Failure to properly clean the teeth leads to the food particles in the teeth going rotten and the plaque on the teeth hardening and turning into tartar. This causes gum disease and tooth decay. The bacteria in the mouth will also produce bad-smelling waste, which makes the breath smell worse than it usually is.
People may brush their teeth regularly and make regular visits to the dentist. Even then patients can still suffer from bad breath when smoking or using tobacco products. The nicotine and chemicals found in tobacco products lead to gum disease, which makes the breath worse. Even if the patient does not end up having gum disease, the tobacco use will still give them bad breath. Since tobacco use can also lead to more serious health problems, smokers are advised to give up the habit before it causes bigger problems than bad breath.
Lack of saliva
If a person has a dry mouth, it means the body is not producing enough saliva, which is a condition that can be caused by different factors. The lack of saliva allows the bacteria in the mouth to grow because the bacteria cannot be washed away, leading to very bad breath. If a person is not producing enough saliva, they should drink a lot of water to hydrate the body.
As previously mentioned, poor oral health is not the only reason someone may have bad breath. Dentists tell patients that factors like their medical condition also play a role in how breath smells. For example, a medical condition that affects how the breath smells is tonsillitis. Food debris, mucus, dead cells and bacteria can get trapped in the tonsils, and when these harden, they form tonsil stones. If someone suffers from chronic tonsil inflammations, bad breath is likely an indicator that they have tonsil stones, which can be treated by gargling warm saltwater.
Another condition is sinus breath. This is caused by an infection of the sinuses due to inflammation or allergies. In addition, lung breath can cause halitosis. People can have bad breath if their lungs are infected because of medical conditions like pneumonia, tuberculosis, pulmonary abscess, emphysema or bronchitis.
The other types of bad breath caused by medical conditions are gut breath, metabolic breath, diabetes breath, drug breath, liver breath, trimethylaminuria breath, menstrual breath, drug-induced bad breath and halitophobia.
Having bad breath can be embarrassing. Fortunately, it is a condition that can be treated. Now that you know the most common causes of bad breath, talk to your dentist to find out more about how to treat and prevent bad breath.
