Food and Drinks That Damage Your Teeth

There is a general conception that candy and soda are likely to damage teeth.  However, candy is only one of many threats to your pearly whites. Even something as seemingly innocent and non-threatening as bread has the potential to damage teeth.

Let's take a look at some of the worst beverages and foods for your teeth.

Carbonated Beverages Damage Teeth

Consuming carbonated beverages is terrible for the teeth.  These beverages empower plaque to produce acid that directly attacks the tooth enamel.  The bottom line is that sipping on soda or another carbonated beverage is one of the worst things you can do for your oral health.  Sip soda all day and you will coat your teeth with acid from sun up until sundown.

Furthermore, carbonated beverages dry out the mouth, causing less saliva production and a hastening of tooth decay.  Add in the fact that dark-hued carbonated beverages will stain your teeth. It is also that much easier to understand why more and more people are transitioning to non-carbonated sugar-free beverages.

Sour Candy

Candy is terrible for the teeth.  Sour candy is especially bad for your pearly whites.  Sour candies are loaded with all sorts of different acids that are especially harmful to teeth.  The fact that these candies are chewy and will stick to the chompers for an extended period of time makes decay that much more likely.

Thus, do not treat yourself to sour candies when you are craving something sweet.  Choose something like dark chocolate and rinse out your mouth with water after.

Fruits With Citrus Will Damage Teeth

Foods containing citrus such as grapefruits, lemons and oranges are delicious yet their acid will erode your teeth enamel.  Eroded tooth enamel makes decay that much more likely. All it takes is squeezing a lime or lemon into your water for acid exposure.  Furthermore, citric acid will prove irritating to mouth sores to boot.

Potato Chips

Chips taste amazing yet they are rife with starch.  Starch transitions into sugar that will become lodged between the teeth.  This sugar feeds bacteria in plaque. The problem is chips are so addictive it is tough to stop after a handful.  The acid remaining from potato chips will linger for quite a long time unless you clean your teeth.

Dried Fruit

Dried fruits are incredibly sticky to the point that eating them will damage teeth.  They stick to the teeth and other portions of the mouth, leaving ample sugar behind. If you are partial to dried fruits, rinse out your mouth with water after eating them so they do not prove as harmful to your teeth.


Bread seems like a plain and harmless food.  However, bread is a legitimate threat to your oral health.  As you chew bread, your saliva breaks down the starch into sugar.  Bread becomes a paste-like gummy substance that adheres to the spaces between the teeth.  This predicament leads to the onset of cavities. When in doubt, opt for a refined variety of bread such as a whole wheat sandwich that has minimal sugar.
