When you are dealing with stained, discolored or damaged teeth, dental bonding is one of the solutions available. It helps restore the appearance of the damaged tooth and regain some of its functions. Other dental prosthetics like crowns and veneers can also be used to restore the look of a damaged tooth, but these come with significantly higher price tags.
Let us take a look at common treatments used to deal with stained or damaged teeth:
Common solutions for stained, discolored or broken teeth
1. Dental bonding
As mentioned, dental bonding is one of the more affordable solutions when it comes to restoring the look of a damaged tooth. It is also a straightforward procedure that involves no pain.
During the treatment, the dentist will use phosphoric acid to roughen the surface of the tooth that needs to be repaired. This is done to make it easier for the composite that will be used to bond tightly with the tooth.
The dentist will then put the putty-like resin directly on the affected tooth and mold it into the desired shape. The composite is hardened with an ultraviolet light and is polished and buffed for a smooth appearance.
The entire process takes less than an hour, and the patient is good to go once it is completed.
2. Dental crowns
Also called caps, crowns can be used to address most of the issues composites are used to treat. A crown is a protective cover that is shaped to look just like a real tooth. It fully encloses the damaged tooth, hiding all the damage and discoloration. This reduces of the odds of the tooth being further damaged by decay. Once a crown has been installed, the look and function of the tooth is restored.
Crowns are normally made from ceramics and porcelain, but materials like silver, gold and a variety of metal alloys are sometimes used. It usually comes down to each individual's taste and how much they are willing to spend.
During the installation of caps, dentists sometimes remove a small portion of tooth enamel. This is done to ensure the cap looks as natural as possible once it is inserted inside the patient's mouth.
Veneers are thin shell-like devices that serve as covers for the front of teeth. They can be used to hide issues like stains, discoloration, chips and disfigured teeth. Veneers are often made out of ceramics or porcelain, which makes it easier to keep stains and discoloration away once they are installed.
It should be noted that veneers only cover the front of a tooth, so it cannot be used for all cases of broken teeth.
During the installation of veneers, it is normal for dentists to remove a small portion of teeth enamel. This makes the veneers look more natural after installation.
