5 Tips to Prevent Stained Teeth

Who wants to end up with stained teeth? It takes away from the natural bright appearance of your chompers and it can leave you feeling self-conscious about the appearance of your smile. The condition of your teeth is one of the first things people notice about you.

People see bright, healthy-looking teeth as attractive and a sign of success. while people see stained teeth as unattractive and a sign of financial difficulty. With so many assumptions about someone based on the condition of their teeth, it no surprise having discolored teeth can have a significant impact on one's self-esteem.

5 steps you can take to prevent stains from developing on your teeth

1. Practice good oral hygiene

Taking good care of your mouth goes a long way; especially if you are serious about keeping discoloration and stains away. If you fail to do the most basic things, it is only a matter of time before you end up with discolored and damaged teeth.

Brush your teeth at least twice a day, floss daily and use a quality mouthwash to clean the tight spaces in your mouth. Doing these things will keep stains away and help keep your teeth healthy.

2. Avoid drinks and foods that lead to stained teeth

Coffee, tea, pasta sauce and red wine can lead to major staining and discoloration on the teeth. These foods and beverages have strong coloring agents and eating them regularly will lead to stains. If you absolutely must have some of these, make sure to rinse your mouth with milk or water afterward.

3. Use a straw for beverages with dark colors

There are certain beverages that discolor teeth because of the strong coloring agents inside them. It is possible to minimize the staining by drinking the beverage with a straw. This reduces the amount of contact the beverage makes with the teeth during consumption. The less contact the teeth have with the beverage, the less chance of staining.

4. Quit smoking

It is virtually impossible to have a white, pearly smile when you are a smoker. This is due to the fact that tobacco products contain tar that smoking will deposit onto the teeth during use. This gives the teeth a yellow tint. If you are a smoker and you are not yet ready to quit, make sure you use a toothpaste for smokers since this has chemicals that can help remove some of that tar buildup.

5. Get a professional whitening

Regardless of how well you take care of your teeth, you will eventually end up with some stains and discoloration. That is where teeth whitening products come in. There are a variety of over-the-counter whitening products available at your local supermarket. However, for best results, go for a professional whitening session with a dentist. Dentists have access to significantly more powerful whiteners.
